Limiting beliefs

A bird sitting on a branch is not afraid of the branch breaking – her trust is not on the branch but on her wings.

So many of us think about the things we would like to do and then spend the next half hour telling ourselves the reasons why we can’t do them !

It’s too difficult, I don’t have the money, I don’t have the time, my partner wouldn’t like it, I’m really not good enough. Are any of these phrases familiar to you? I’m positive they are.

So there are a few actions we should take if we are really serious about achieving a certain goal. Far too often we just don’t pursue something because of limiting beliefs. We make excuses and we allow ‘things’ to stop us.

Think of that one thing you’d love to do or achieve but you have always found a reason not to do it – quite often a negative reason not to do it. Ask yourself these questions…

How would it feel if you could just go and do it now – no barriers/obstacles ?

What difference would it make in your life?

How would it impact others?

If all of these answers are positive then surely you should investigate what the reasons are that stop you fulfilling this goal.

Here are a few ways to look at what your limiting beliefs are and work out how to overcome them.

Write the limiting belief down.

Whatever you are trying to achieve writing things down just cements it and gives you a reference point.

Follow your thoughts and emotions to discover what is actually holding you back. Put those thoughts on paper and stare them in the face!

Acknowledge that these are beliefs, not truths!

This is often the hardest step. To you your beliefs are real and very strong. Here’s the place where choice comes in. Which would you prefer – defend your limitations to the death or achieve your goals and desires?

Evelyn Waugh wrote, “When we argue for our limitations, we get to keep them.” This really is your choice and YES, you have one !!

Try on a different belief.

Use your imagination and try on a belief that is aligned with what you want. It might be something like, “My financial difficulties in the past have taught me so much that I’m fully prepared to handle them now!” Or, “Now that I’ve been in an unhealthy relationship I’ve learned what to look for in a happy, loving partner!”

The trick is to go beyond just saying it. You want to really step into this new belief and feel how it feels.

You have to work at this and repeat until it feels easy to do.

Take different action.

This will no doubt feel scary, but the trick is to belief it is true. Think about what you’d like to be or do. So if you really are a confident person, how would you act at a party? What might you say? How would you walk in the room? If you really are the kind of person who eats healthy food, what will your shopping basket look like at the checkout ?

If you avoid taking any steps based on your new belief, you will just feed your old limiting belief. It will become stronger and again it will win.

Taking action, even the smallest step, will help cement your new un-limiting decision. Your first steps don’t have to be perfect, just headed in the right direction. And be sure to acknowledge yourself when you’ve taken that step.

This is your starting point to believing that you can actually do whatever you want to do.

Strength doesn’t come from what you can do – it comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t do.
